At Bali Teak Furniture, we believe that the enduring beauty of our furniture must be matched by an enduring commitment to the planet and its people. Sustainability is not an afterthought; it is woven into the fabric of our business model, from the forests where our timber is grown to the communities where our artisans live and work. Our approach is holistic, focusing on legal sourcing, responsible production, and meaningful community empowerment.
Pillar 1: Legal, Traceable, and Sustainable Wood Sourcing
The foundation of our sustainability promise is the legality and responsible sourcing of our primary raw material: teak wood.
- Mandatory SVLK Compliance: We operate in 100% compliance with Indonesia’s national timber legality assurance system, SVLK (Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu). This is our baseline. Every product we create is traceable through the supply chain, and every export shipment is certified with a V-Legal Document. This system is recognized by the EU, Australia, and the US as a robust framework for combating illegal logging.
- Prioritizing Plantation Teak: A significant portion of our Grade-A teak is sourced from state-managed plantations run by Perum Perhutani. These plantations are managed on long-term rotational cycles, ensuring that harvesting is balanced with reforestation and the forest remains a renewable resource for future generations.
- Championing Reclaimed Teak: We are passionate advocates for the use of reclaimed teak. This timber, salvaged from old Javanese structures, bridges, and warehouses, is a perfect example of a circular economy. It reduces the demand for new timber, preserves a piece of Indonesian history, and offers unparalleled character and stability due to its age and decades of natural seasoning.
Pillar 2: Responsible Production & Environmental Stewardship
Our commitment extends into our workshops, where we actively work to minimize our environmental footprint.
- Waste-to-Energy Programs: We implement a strict waste minimization policy. Wood offcuts and sawdust are not discarded; they are collected and used as biomass fuel for the kilns that dry our timber. This reduces our reliance on fossil fuels and ensures that every part of the log is utilized.
- Low-Impact Finishes: We prioritize the use of water-based and low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) finishes. These alternatives are better for the environment and create a healthier workplace for our finishing artisans compared to traditional solvent-based lacquers.
- Reforestation Partnership with Trees4Trees™: We believe in giving back more than we take. We have a formal partnership with the Indonesian non-profit foundation Trees4Trees™. For every FCL container of furniture we export, we fund the planting of a significant number of new trees, contributing to community-led reforestation efforts in Central Java.
Pillar 3: Community Empowerment & Ethical Employment
Our business is fundamentally about people. We are committed to ensuring that our operations create lasting positive impacts for our employees and their communities.
- Fair Wages & Safe Working Conditions: We ensure all our partner workshops provide wages that exceed the local minimum, offer safe working environments compliant with K3 standards, and provide all legally mandated benefits, including BPJS health and social security insurance.
- Preserving Generational Skills: The craft of furniture making in Jepara is a cultural heritage. We invest in our artisans by supporting apprenticeship programs that allow master craftsmen, like our own Budi Hartono, to pass on their invaluable skills in carving and joinery to the next generation.
- Supporting the Local Economy: Beyond our direct employees, we are committed to sourcing locally. Over 95% of our operational supplies, from finishing materials to packing supplies, are purchased from local Indonesian businesses, ensuring the economic benefits of our trade are distributed within the community.
