Our Methodology — How We Source, Vet, and Produce Teak Furniture

The exceptional quality of our Bali Teak Furniture is not an accident; it is the result of a systematic, rigorous, and transparent methodology that governs every stage of our operation. This methodology is our promise to you—a guarantee of consistent quality, verified legality, and reliable partnership. It’s how we transform raw Indonesian timber into world-class furniture. Our approach is built on four distinct stages of evaluation and control.

Stage 1: Workshop & Supplier Vetting

We partner with a curated network of workshops in Jepara and Bali. Before any workshop is brought into our network, it must pass a comprehensive audit conducted by our team.

  • SVLK Legal Compliance (Score: Pass/Fail): This is our first and most critical checkpoint. We verify the workshop’s active SVLK certification through the official Indonesian Ministry of Forestry portal. We also review their history of producing V-Legal documents. A failure here immediately disqualifies a potential partner.
  • Craftsmanship & Specialization (Score: 1-10): We assess the skill level of the artisans, their expertise in specific techniques (e.g., carving, joinery, finishing), and the overall quality of their past work. We look for specialists who align with our quality standards.
  • Infrastructure & Equipment (Score: 1-10): We inspect the condition and precision of their machinery, especially their kiln-drying facilities. A properly calibrated kiln is essential for achieving the 8-12% moisture content required for export to drier climates.
  • Ethical Labor Audit (Score: Pass/Fail): We ensure the workshop complies with Indonesian labor laws, provides safe working conditions (K3 standards), and offers fair wages. We have a zero-tolerance policy for child labor.

Stage 2: Raw Material Sourcing & Verification

The final product is only as good as the materials used. We have a strict protocol for all timber.

  • Teak Grade Verification: We physically inspect timber shipments to ensure they meet the agreed-upon grade. Grade-A Teak must be from the heartwood of a mature tree, have a uniform golden-brown color, straight grain, and be free of knots, cracks, and sapwood.
  • Moisture Content Testing: Upon arrival at the workshop and after kiln-drying, our team uses digital moisture meters to test the timber. The target is 8-12% MC. Wood outside this range is rejected or re-dried.
  • Source Traceability: For plantation teak, we require documentation tracing it back to legal, state-managed plantations (Perum Perhutani). For reclaimed teak, we document its origin (e.g., decommissioned Javanese homes, bridges) to verify its authenticity and age.

Stage 3: In-Production Quality Control (QC)

Our QC team, led by our Head of Production, is present throughout the manufacturing process. We don’t wait until the end to find mistakes.

  • Component Check: Before assembly, we inspect individual components for precise cuts and dimensions.
  • Joinery Inspection: We ensure all joints (e.g., mortise and tenon, dovetail) are perfectly fitted, strong, and glued correctly. This is crucial for the furniture’s longevity.
  • Sanding & Finishing Checks: The sanding process is monitored to ensure a perfectly smooth surface. We check the application of finishes for consistency in color and thickness, with no drips or imperfections.
  • Assembly & Stability Review: Once assembled, each piece is checked for stability. Tables must be level, and chairs must be free of any wobble.

Stage 4: Final Inspection & Export Packing

The final stage is a meticulous pre-shipment inspection (PSI) that every single item must pass before it can be packed.

  • 100% Final Review: Each piece is compared against the approved technical drawings, specifications, and finish samples.
  • Packing Protocol: We use a multi-layer packing system designed for the rigors of FCL ocean freight. This typically includes a foam wrap for surface protection, corrugated cardboard for impact resistance, and reinforced corner guards. High-value or fragile items may be crated.
  • Container Loading Supervision: Our team supervises the loading of the container to ensure it is packed tightly and securely, minimizing the risk of movement and damage during transit.

This comprehensive methodology is what makes Bali Teak Furniture a trusted name in the industry. It’s a system designed to deliver not just furniture, but confidence. For more on our commitment to transparency, see our Editorial Standards.
